In April, during the Re:Bazaar "Green Waves" at Mall Galleria Burgas, the BBF was the Green Guest and presented the donation initiative: "Let's renew the Avocet Trail". Thus, thanks to the organizers of the event and the generosity of the participating companies and visitors, 1,476 leva was raised. With these funds, the Art Observatory near Atanasovsko Lake was renovated and transformed, so that it continues to be one of the beloved places on the bird watching route.
The first version of the Observatory was created from wicker according to the idea of the BBF and executed by the master basket maker Stanko Kirov back in 2015. Its "luxurious look" was not yet suitable for the Avocet Trail and therefore it was placed in different places - at the Salt Festival, in the Sea Garden and in Park Ezero - before returning to the concrete platform on the shore of Atanasovsko Lake. In its place, master Stanko braided a new, rougher installation from hazel – completely resembling a nest, which delighted visitors for 5 years before falling apart. This prompted us to return the installation to a wicker and metal base, which already had a wilder look, but over time, it was quite exploited, the wicker fell apart, and it had to be repaired.
With the donations collected, we managed to make a “complete change” and turn the perspective: it is not nature that is closed, but us humans. Entering the “Cage”, the visitor remains in the center, and free nature unfolds in front of him.
The repair included machine cleaning of the metal structure from a thick layer of rust, impregnation, painting and protection from atmospheric influences. The artistic braid from thick marine rope was made again by Stanko Kirov, and the rope was sealed with a special varnish for greater durability. A metal Avocet will be mounted on the “Cage” to complete the artistic look of the installation.
In parallel with the renovation of the observatory, a complete renovation of the Avocet Trail was also underway, implemented as part of the BBF initiative “Burgas on Three Lakes and One Sea” under the Empower Us project. New information boards, an outdoor classroom, new play and educational facilities for children and relaxation areas were installed.
The Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation expresses its sincere gratitude to the organizers of Re:Bazaar, as well as to all donors, volunteers and partners who supported the campaign and helped Atanasovsko Lake become more accessible and better known to the guests and citizens of Burgas.
