The renovated Avocet Trail awaits you

Sep. 16, 2025
Avocet Trail
On September 11, 2025, the renovated Avocet Trail on the shore of Atanasovsko Lake was officially opened at an exciting two-part ceremony. After it was created in 2015 by the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation team, the Trail has undergone several changes over the past decade, including the replacement of broken signs, the installation of new observation points, and the refurbishment of the surrounding area. Over the decade, the trail has become particularly popular among the residents of Burgas, with more and more people rediscovering it every year.

Therefore, the team of the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation decided, as part of the pilot project "Burgas of Three Lakes and One Sea" within EmpowerUs, to renovate this place and create better conditions for the local community for rest, solitude, education, and entertainment. With the help of architect Mariana Sarbova, the design of the new elements was created. The renovation of the trail began in June and continued under the expert guidance of Diana Pavlova from the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and architect Sarbova until the beginning of September. Today, we can boast of the renovated and very attractive Avocet Trail, which, in addition to new places for rest and bird watching in the lake, also offers new recreation and entertainment points.

It is through the various modules, such as "In the hole of the Ruddy shelduck", that children will learn that there are two types of shelducks in the lake—white and red—and that both species use abandoned fox or badger holes to lay their eggs and raise their young. The balance of the lake is one of the topics that is very important to present because, although the lake exists in symbiosis between human activity and nature conservation, in recent years, we have seen that the balance is very fragile and the normal functioning of the ecosystem in Atanasovsko Lake can be easily disrupted. The romantic swing at the end of the completed section of the trail is dedicated to monogamy in birds. However, there are plans to develop it further in a subsequent stage, all the way to the next observation point, "The Egg."

Perhaps the most interesting module for children is "On the Dikes and Barriers", where they learn that the birds here are ground-nesting and lay their eggs directly on these dikes, so they must be very careful to ensure their protection. If they jump on the pegs, they will learn the tracks of the birds found in Atanasovsko Lake. From the exhibition we have arranged on one of the screens, they will be able to learn more about the most characteristic birds that can be seen in the nearby pools in front of the Hide and learn interesting information about their size, diet, and even their total number in the world.

The Avocet Trail welcomed its first official guests at 4 p.m., when we invited the institutions, organizations, and companies that have helped us maintain the Trail so far and on whom we rely to continue helping us in the future, as it is mainly the product of the shared care of various people who have an interest in preserving it and developing it in the best possible way. At 6 p.m., it was time for the celebration for the friends of the lake and the citizens, when, to the sounds of the guitar and the voice of Ivaylo Hristov, they enjoyed a pleasant atmosphere, and the catering with salicornia, provided by our friends from the Zornitsa bakery, made them feel very comfortable. Hundreds of flamingos had gathered nearby, giving everyone who wanted to see their beautiful white-pink-reddish colours up close the opportunity to do so. The evening ended unexpectedly when, at 7:30 p.m., someone released mosquitoes, forcing the guests to leave the area very quickly, almost in a panic.
We hope that the Trail will welcome many new friends who will find here the peace or the place for fun, learning, or relaxation they are looking for, close to the city, but still wild enough!
